City Human Settlements Committee conducts oversight visit to informal settlements, engages residents

Members of the City’s Human Settlements Portfolio Committee, including Chairperson Councillor Albert Ntsodo, visited the Tsunami and Kosovo informal settlements to engage with residents. The Committee also engaged members of the Marikana and Beleka settlements.

The City’s Human Settlements Portfolio Committee conducted an oversight visit to the settlements following concerns about flooding and the impact on residents having settled in low-lying, flood-prone areas. During the visit, members of the committee engaged with residents, community representatives and City officials to assess the conditions on the ground and discuss plans to mitigate flooding risks where feasible.

‘The City is implementing informal settlement upgrading programmes where feasible, which seek to promote greater resilience and improved adaptation to flooding of settlements in areas across the metro. The Committee will continue to monitor these settlements to ensure the necessary interventions are implemented where possible.



‘The Committee was also welcomed by Marikana settlement residents who appreciated feedback and updates by City officials. The meeting emphasised the importance of involvement and communication by the City. Additional updates for ongoing projects in the area will be shared with residents in the coming weeks. We thank all stakeholders for a productive oversight visit,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.
